3 Steps to Boost Your Productivity

Break Free From Procrastination: 3 Steps to Boost Your Productivity

Procrastination—we’ve all been there. Someone once gave me a great book on how to stop procrastinating. The problem is, I just haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. Sound familiar?

As a business owner, you probably have great ideas and ambitious goals. But sometimes, it feels impossible to make progress because procrastination keeps getting in the way. The more you delay, the more stress builds up. It affects your productivity, your relationships, and even your ability to lead effectively.

But here’s the good news: you can break free from procrastination, and when you do, you’ll feel more in control, your productivity will soar, and your team and family will benefit too.

Let’s dive into three key strategies that will help you stop procrastinating and finally get things done.

1. Set Clear Goals and Deadlines

One of the most effective ways to combat procrastination is by setting clear goals and deadlines. Having a goal gives you direction and urgency, but writing it down makes it real.

Instead of just a typical to-do list, I recommend creating a to-be-accomplished list. Focus on what needs to be achieved rather than just tasks that need to be checked off. At the end of each day, write down the key tasks you want to complete the next morning—especially that one big task you’ve been avoiding. When you start your day by tackling that big, difficult task, the rest of your day becomes easier. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and momentum.

2. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Big projects can feel overwhelming, and that’s often why we put them off. The solution? Break those big tasks into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Think of it like eating an elephant—one bite at a time.

The key is to identify the very first step. Once you take that initial action, momentum will start to build. Little by little, you’ll make progress, and before you know it, the project that once felt unmanageable will be moving forward. Don’t worry about the entire task—just focus on the first small step, and let the momentum carry you.

3. Eliminate Distractions

In a world full of distractions, it’s no wonder that procrastination thrives. To be truly productive, you need to minimize those distractions.

Start by turning off notifications on your phone and computer. Let your family and team know when you need focused time, and put up a "Do Not Disturb" sign to signal that you’re working on something important. You’re not cutting yourself off from the world forever, just long enough to focus and make progress. Once you’ve completed your key tasks, you can give your attention to everything else without the stress of unfinished work hanging over you.

Make Progress Today

Overcoming procrastination comes down to three things: setting clear goals and deadlines, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and eliminating distractions. When you apply these strategies, you’ll not only get more done, but you’ll feel less stressed, more motivated, and in control of your time. Plus, you’ll positively impact your team, your business, and your personal life.
